Republicans have a ~~veto proof~~ majority in ~~both houses~~ the House and the Senate and hold the presidency but tell me again how ~~this is the Democrats fault.~~ it requires 60 votes to pass legislation out of the Senate and there are only 51 Republican Senators.
The scariest thing about this shutdown is finding out how poorly Americans understand how their own democracy works. A "veto-proof majority"? I'm not even American and I know stupid that sounds. Though, not as bad as all the idiots I've seen on /r/news who don't know what a filibuster is.
60 votes were needed.
Republicans have 51 seats.
5 Democrats voted yes.
Why can’t we be pissed at both of them for being so stubborn? Hate this blame game
Not veto proof, but when republicans want to screw over future generations with tax cuts for the wealthy, they make sure they get that done.
A "veto-proof majority" requires one party to have 2/3 of the seats in both houses of Congress. Republicans have 51 out of 100 senate seats. I don't know what the count is in the House, but I doubt that it is 2/3.
