They honestly need to stop treating the medieval period as just this massive period of darkness and ignorance when in reality, African, early Byzantine, Islamic, Indian, Chinese, Meso-American and Mongolian empires and societies were flourishing during this period. Much of what we have today is thanks to the advancements and preservations undertaken by these empires with many having a relatively good quality of life with access to medicine, food, clean water and shelter with limited outbreaks of war and plague.
What they should stop doing
Putting No bullying or Bully free Zone signs on the walls. It's just not going to work. My school does nothing about bullying. I was bullied all the way through middle school and no one really cared.
What does work, punishing the bullies instead of telling the person who's being bullied just to "ignore them" because with the internet that's impossible to do or suspending the person who's doing the bullying, instead of the one who eventually stands up for themselves.
Edit: A sentance
You simply cannot expect teenagers going through Hormonal Change Hell and interacting with the opposite sex/same sex every single day to keep it in their pants ALL the time, EVERY time. Teaching abstinence-only is more likely to lead to pregnancy than teaching about safe sex and protection, because in abstinence-only you're not teaching them that it is POSSIBLE to protect themselves once they inevitably decide to experiment.
Abstinence is a personal choice and it's not something that should be universally encouraged as the One True Solution.
I don't know what they should stop teaching but they should start teaching how to save money, pay bills, responsibly accumulate debt, and balance a fucking budget
That being in an athletic program is practically a free pass through school. Of course there are always going to be students that can balance both a sport and advanced classes, but I saw numerous classmates fail classes nearly every semester and keep getting pushed into the next year because they were athletes.
I before e except after c, in most cases it's wrong.
The imperial system in science . Literally every scientific organization uses the metric system all it does in confuse kids .
"You have to go to college!"
That shit needs to stop, right now.
Simply parroting information. I can remember very few things that were "memorization exercises" or things that were irrelevant to anything else we were learning that were "very important because it will be on your test." I can remember a ton of stuff we actually had to learn because we needed it for more than just for one quiz and a final as well as just about everything we had to independently research. Quite a bit of the "learn this for your test" bullshit was only even in the curriculum because it was part of the government mandated standardized tests. Kids need to learn to think and research instead of just parrot information.
Abstinence only sex education
Like holy shit it doesn't fucking work
Show us condoms
Tell us about birth control.
Edit: I'm not saying stop teaching it. I'm saying supplement it with birth control education so if they do decide to bang. And they will because hormones. They will be safe.
And condoms help prevent stds so
Elementary Math, or at least stop teaching it with the current methods. It's not math anymore, it's all about techniques, almost a modern Chisenbop method, to get an answer. Short on theory, and convoluted as hell. I tried to help my 5th grade nephew do homework and I was helpless on a couple questions. I could get the answer MY way, but not by the 'new' way. ("Show all your work, Class")
And I've completed a broad math background -- Calc, DiffEqs, etc, (EE Program in the 1990s), but couldn't solve elementary stuff -- I just don't get why they want to teach a crucial subject in such a way.
WTF? Am I too old? 🤔
