No matter how much I try I just can't stand these shitty adaptions. I don't care if it still makes a 'good movie' (whatever that means to people), it's completely disrespectful to the original material and totally misleading to the people they're marketing to. I would forgive them if they tried and failed at capturing the spirit and the nuance of the original works, but they never make the slightest effort. They're like vultures; they just buy the name, crap out something lazy and derivative, then move on to the next one after it fizzles out a few weeks after release because it was only ever a box office cash grab insured by the popularity of the source material (Ghost in the Shell was the last one of these I saw).
Fight Club exists, along with countless other examples of successful adaptions of psychological and cerebral books. If a director has their own vision then they should make and own their own damn movie and not rely on the reputation of the work that inspired it. I wish I could enjoy them for what they are, but all I see when I watch them is all the ways they could have been faithful but weren't.
