To me Revival was such an amazingly good thriller I would rank it in my top ten for King books.
Sleeping Beauties on the other hand had the same issues that Under the Dome did. It had some amazing scenes, great characters, great premise, but is completely overwritten. I am normally a defender of King's long windedness, but those two books could be cut by about 25% and it would improve the book by quite a lot.
I read revival my senior year of High school, and I remember it actually left me shaken to my core. The concepts are pretty heavy, and the way he ends it is fantastic. Would definitely recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it yet. Probably my favorite book from Stephen King since 11/22/63.
I think his "comeback" started with Duma Key, which featured a guy going through a challenging rehab after an accident, not unlike King himself. Everything since then has been a return to form.
Sleeping Beauties was good, until the second half.
<shrug> It was still a really good book. Not exactly my cup of tea.
His more recent stuff has been amazing, even more than the early stuff. My first "grown up" book was The Long Walk. After that, I couldn't get enough Stephen King.
His writing has aged like a fine wine...simply better with age.
I'm a Stephen King junkie and I agree with most of that. Mr. Mercedes was awesome, same with the rest...except I thought Sleeping Beauties was terrible. One of his worst books to date. I really struggled to finish it and that is never the case with a SK novel. I thought maybe it was the influence of Owen King being a co-writer. I haven't read any of Owens stuff before, so no opinion on him. Dunno, just haven't disliked a SK book that much since Gerald's Game.
Agreed - Revival was fantastic, I was pleasantly surprised actually, I didn't have very high expectations, but it really was one of his best I think. The Bill Hodges trilogy was just brilliant. Not yet read Sleeping Beauties, but I am really looking forward to it.
Okay you've piqued my interest but I'm scared to ask how long Revival is...
I heard about SK for so long but never got around to actually reading a novel since the book sizes usually scared me off BUT ever since i heard this new IT movie was going to come out last year i decided to read the book first (didn’t realize the book was over the 1000 pgs) & being the first one ive ever decided to read, i stuck through it finished before the movie came out and it has created this NEED to read all of his books! I started making a list of all the books hes ever written and published and im trying to get through as many as i can this year. Im currently on The Stand (uncut version) and i keep trying to hide out at work to keep reading it im just in great awe at how good he is to keep you wanting more. Sleeping Beauties is my next choice and im looking forward to any updates or reviews you may have on the book!
Revival was great, Sleeping Beauties is the worst SK novel ever.
