Ive seen this in action. K9 Officers are a police dogs entire world. They meet them when the are puppies and train with them, not to mention spend 24/7 with them since they are together at work and home. Since dogs view work ( takedowns, catching bad guys, finding contraband) as play its basically all fun for them all the time. The bond between the two of them is really strong.
A retired K9 dog at my dept. passed recently and it hit the officer really hard. He said his wife cries every day and he got chocked up just talking about it. Its basically your shadow for your entire life.
I think the dog is scratching itself on that short haircut
I love GSDs and Belgians because they are absolutely intimidating/frightening dogs when you see what they are capable of doing. But, when you know them they are the absolute biggest babies/cuddle bugs in the world.

So how does this work? I've always had this idea of dogs with jobs, especially cops, as being all business, basically having all the puppy trained out of them. (Sort of like how you're not supposed to pet service animals)
Is the training such that they can pretty much switch it on/off as needed?
