For brown widow spiders, sex is literally a matter of life and death. If a male chooses an adult female, chances are roughly 50/50 that she’ll eat him afterward. But if he mates with a younger subadult female, she’ll let him live to see another day. Despite this, the males prefer older mates.

446 mark_wooten I did Boston today, which was my 4th Boston, and my 60th marathon. I have NEVER raced in such miserable conditions. COLD rain and 25 mph headwind. I have never seen so many people just completely wrecked after the finish. Congrats to Desi for persevering. I’m just getting in from my flight, but I heard a rumor that she even tried to hang back to help Shalane get back into the race.
518 ChumbleSpazz Also motivating: the woman who finished 2nd, an American named Sarah Sellers, is an *amateur* runner with a full time job.
62 jralbus99 This is most of what life is; just showing up and trying your best. Just rewatched the coverage from today, truly an amazing race today!
34 rootberryfloat I guess I never realized that even very experienced runners have days where they feel awful when they run. That is actually quite motivating for me.
47 NotTheFakeJeff This is great. And she’s great. Did you know about Tim Don, who also ran the marathon? He broke his neck six months ago and ran the race today in 2:49:42. https://mobile.nytimes.com/2018/04/12/sports/tim-don-boston-marathon-ironman.html So many inspiring people running out there today in those nasty conditions.
54 foxeyedman23 Finally a quote that actually motivates me
16 starscream713 I needed this. On Saturday, I had a terrible day at work. I felt like a noob at a position I’ve been at for 13 years. Everything i did went wrong. I wanted to quit. I was so frustrated. I felt like I let my team down. But I stayed and showed up the next day. Got a high five and some laughs with the persons who also had the same rough day I had because we all made it. (we work in surgery)
19 vanillawowog What if everyday is trudging through hell?
16 Crushed1ce Thank you. Needed this. Also I hate running....but I do like writing comedy so this will be applied.

5 rebeccasfriend So proud of you today. I cried when you crossed the finish line. You are an amazing athlete.
