Monk 1: So when a dog and bird are making out
Monk 2: Right
Seriously haven't laughed this hard in a while. Thanks OP, I needed that 👍
I read something about this once, specifically about snails appearing in these paintings. The most common theory is that they were a joke on the Lombards, a Germanic tribe who during this time period after being defeated by Charlemagne were widely distributed and primarily worked as merchants, pawn brokers, and bankers. This caused them to be perceived as greedy, or "slimy", and because they were everywhere they had no home of their own and traveled alot they were mocked as Snails. From there snails may have become an allegory for greed and sin in general, and also a parody of those things as well, or a parody of the crawl of time, or even a parody of a foolish Knight fighting an "armored opponent". This was common knowledge at the time, and so nobody thought to write it down because it was universally understood until the times moved on and the joke became abandoned and was forgotten.
So basically what I'm saying is that these monks illustrations were ancient memes.
I am so glad all my random drawing are not going to be mocked years later.
It's incredibly worrying when the bedbird tucks you in.
I feel like if you don't read this in Cleese/Idle voices, you're not doing it right.

Does anyone know the actual context of the drawings? Fire horse and bed bird intrigue me and I *really* wanna know what they were supposed to mean.
Im sitting here laughing like an idiot in the middle of the night. Im sure if my roommates came in, they'd only have even more questions after I tried explaining why I'm laughing so obnoxiously loud.
This is golden. I can't recall laughing so loud at smth I've seen online. Everyone at the subway is looking at me like I'm some kind of madman. Thank you.
This is my new favorite thing, coming up with a backstory for whatever is in an illustration.
It helps that monks could be presumably isolated from civilization, trying to remember how things were.
I feel like I've seen these before, but damn they're still hilarious.
Pic #7 is only partially right. Dairy cows are the only species of cow that has to put wheels on their boats. All other types of cows are actually quite good sailors contrary to popular belief.
