My office converted to open office for "more collaboration" (read cost savings on space). I assure you, it is much worse than cubes. No privacy, loud, sickness spreads whenever anyone sneezes, and worst of all the distraction headache. There's so much motion and noise around you, that your mind want to focus on (because we've evolved to pay attention to sound and movement). By the end of the day you're mentally exhausted. Read a few articles on it. Basically any research condemns even the cost savings of it. You'll note that the people who boast about these designs conveniently tend to have their own private offices...
