In light of the news of the Utopia remake, here's a Utopia supercut [Spoilers]
99 mr_sprinklzzz The show starts to pick up in episode 3, and really picks up by episode 4. I'd say that if you aren't interested by episode 4, then this show isn't for you.
14 rockon4life45 As a huge fan of the books and the show, it's a bit rough until season two. A lot of world building for the greater story. Season one only gets through about 2/3 of the first book. Season two is significantly better and continually improves.
22 theMightBeME I liked it from the beginning, but it was episode 4 that sealed the deal I think the reason it might be boring for some is that it is a huge ensemble piece, and as such it can take some time to get into the characters... I mean people had the same issue with game of thrones... episode 4 is the first like big event that occurs AFTER you have gotten to know the characters, so I wonder if that is aprt of why that is the point in which many people get hooked, or if it is just the way said event is handled in itself.
15 cabose7 episode 4
13 foomy45 Season 1 is a slow one. I hear the books are a different genre for each one and it rly shows in that season, they went for a noir thing that I found extremely boring personally. Season 2 picked up a lot IMO.
7 EveryGoodNameIsGone Episode 4.
11 usualnamenotworking I think if it's boring now it might not get any better, I think partially in a story like this you have to be intrigued enough about the characters, world and story to want to keep watching. I was interested and I also felt it was slow at first, but that it paid off. However, I did not feel like it was a slog for me, where I definitely have friends with similar tastes that complained of such things. So, keep watching only if you *are* enjoying the ride.
3 Blazemuffins I found season 1 interesting at first but the longer it dragged on the worse it got. I have an issue with stories that give everything away to the audience and keep the characters in the dark too long. We get to see how most of the puzzle pieces for together far before the characters do, and it just became frustrating to watch them wrestle over conspiracies that we already saw. Also most of the characters are all completely unlikeable, which doesn't give you much to root for. My husband hated how they diverted from the books, and I hated how close yet so far they came to making a great show.
3 cantpissoffmods It starts slow. I think my interest only peaked around episode 6 or 7. Season 2 was a bit more fast paced. The science part is a very interesting aspect, because its very plausible. We will probably reach the show's tech level in 60 or 70 years, assuming we dont nuke ourselves back to the stone age. After that i picked up the books, and as usual, gonna have to wait 5 or 6 years to see more seasons released. Hopefully they wont axe the show, because i think seasons based on books 4, 5, 6 and 7 will be very good.
7 SmokingBoners I love Sci Fi/space stuff, dark tones, long-arc/slow burn plots, massive worldbuilding, politics, all things that the Expanse goes for. Yet I just can't get hooked by this show. I really want to like it and have seen every episode, some multiple times. Its just not that good in my opinion.
2 ifeedonyourtears I found it kind of dull too, and I'm saying this after watching all of season 1 and 2. I think people liked it because it looks great visually and the show has depth and maturity in its characters and in its story that is lacking in other modern scifi shows. But it never pulled me in for some reason, never made me care about the world. It's a show that I tell myself I should love, but I don't. Maybe I just have bad taste.
2 Adenchiz I felt the same, trust me stick with it ,it gets really good.
2 JabroniSn0w Yeah, the first few episodes are almost entirely intro to the world, characters, politics, and various plot lines. Around episode 4-5 it picks up big time
2 mongospoony I also didn't get into it until episode 4. It's way too chaotic in the pilot with way too many characters being thrown at you. I didn't find it boring though, so maybe it's not for you.
2 Drfunks It does require your investment in the characters. The novels world building is almost on par with Game of Thrones rich history. Just like GoT it does start out slower, and in the case of the Expanse it's a bit more jarring since the conflict aren't spelled out exactly as they parcel this information 1 episode at a time. That said by the time you understand who the major/minor players are halfway through the first season you should be good to go till the rest. This is compelling Sci-fi the way BSG was when it came out years ago. Should stick to it and I'm sure you won't regret it. Try focusing on 1 character's story to help you through the early going.
2 Khalku Took me like half the first season before I was interested. It's still not the strongest but there's not much sci fi these days.
2 Mojoman360 It follows the book so it takes 4ish episodes to set up the stakes
2 DEZbiansUnite starts off a little slow but picks up by the time the main characters meet each other
2 lourensloki S1 is very slow burn but it gets there, S2 picks up the pace a lot too.
2 jfy Gets good around episode 4.
2 santichrist I didn't truly like The Expanse until the start of the second season, I think that's when the show really finds it's footing, but the tail end of the first season is good too I love Thomas Jane so it helped a lot that he was in it
2 RussianAtrocities It really starts to pick up in Season 2, not episode 3, as /u/mr_sprinklzzz says. There is a LOT of world building as the story slowly *expands* from a personal detective story into intrastellar warfare. S1 the story is focused on finding out what happened to the girl. S2 the effects of the alien entity on the intrasteller order are explicated. And by S3 we're on the brink of war between Earth, Mars, and the belt. There's so many characters and a scope that keeps getting bigger and bigger, so it is hard to keep track of everything and stay interested, but if you stick with it you'll probably like it if you like big epic scifi. The first season is much better on a second viewing than first, kind of like Black Sails.
2 Exodus111 Yes. Slow burn.
2 jgtengineer68 It takes about 4 episodes.
2 monchota Yes, watch the first 5 epps and you will be hooked (if good scifi interest you)
2 all_the_keks Yes. It picks up 3-4 episodes in and stays good pretty much constantly after that. It's based on a book so there is a lot of worldbuilding before the interesting stuff happens. Several stories run in parallel and don't magically tie up at the end of season.
2 mrpoopistan The show has to service a massive cast and sprawling plot. It takes it a while for everything to come together, but by the end of season 1 it pays off. The Expanse really bears a rewatch. The first time through you're just trying to assemble all the pieces and understand what's going on. Only after you have that in place is it more fun to just watch. FTR, if you can get the UHD version on Amazon, it's an absolute delight for anyone who spent their childhood reading futurism books that were full of detailed images of space stations and such. The show is total porn for me.
2 Jespy I was on the same boat as you. My friend tried to get me into it, watched the first 4 episodes but I found it confusing as fuck and wasn't sure if it was because it was too late and I was extremely tired, or I just wasn't getting into it. Tried watching it again with me wife a few weeks ago, had the same initial feeling but kept watching it and I absolutely LOVE it now.
5 zmeul the entire season 1 is kinda' boring - it's a lot of world building and establishing characters gets up, really fast, in season 2
4 kazh First episode was good. If you don't like it you don't like it, find something else.
