Venture Brothers deserves more recognition. It was way ahead on this trend and doesn't get enough credit.
If I had to guess, I'd attribute the correlation to an animated medium inherently injecting enough levity into the show that existential themes can be tackled without dragging the average viewer too far down

The way in which Rick discovered or was able to fix his wormhole gun is almost the exact same as what happens in the 90s tv show sliders episode 1.
