Their original plan was for the fire to force a mass exodus out of the cafeteria, where they would be waiting to unleash a barrage of bullets into the fleeing students.
The failed detonation caused them to improvise and go room to room looking for victims.
Despite the brutality of it all, had their initial plan succeeded it could have been much worse.
Iirc, they also had one or two in a car in the parking lot, set to detonate when all the police, family, and news had arrived. It’s scary to think of how much worse it could have been.
I have Dave Cullen’s *Columbine*, but still haven’t worked my way through all of it. It’s depressing to read.
I think they also planted bombs outside to blow up police but they failed
Yep. Read the book. It wasn't as much of a mass shooting as it was a failed bombing.
Within a year or two of this, a student brought a load of guns and pipe bombs to a local high school. He was caught before he could do anything, and the whole school was evacuated. If I remember correctly, he left the bombs in a bag in the cafeteria as well, so maybe he was a copycat.
They failed in life and they failed in death.
I went to Laura Ingles Wilder Elementary just down the block when this happened, and my mom picked me up and told me my baby sitter had been shot multiple times. Does anyone recall hearing about someone who got shot 10 times(bird shot included)? Her twin sister stripped down naked to clog all of her wounds until paramedics could help. Both of them went to and graduated Johns Hopkins University. That day changed a lot of people’s lives...
