Everything is where I want it and I don't want you changing positions...*ladies.*
I'm convinced this is why flavaflav wears a clock, can't take his interviews out of context.
When Sennett kept cutting out Chaplin's improvisations early in his career, Charlie started improvising only when entering or leaving a scene, as that made it harder to cut out.
It’s similar to another strategy used by animators— when designing a new character and they like the design, they’ll add arm hair when it’s done. When their supervisor sees it, they’ll just say to take the arm hair off and leave the design alone.
This answers a very specific question I had about his special.
I watched it a lot of times in high school, but it seemed way stronger in the beginning and got weaker as he went through the set.
Turns out that's because he was innovating in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th acts to try out this technique for TV when he had never tried it before.
He says in the video that his closing bit was something he had never even tried before, with his friends coming out in costume.
It makes sense that not all of the later jokes were polished, he hadn't tinkered with them!
Zach Galifianakis pulled a similar stunt wherein he kept taking sweatshirts off so that they couldn’t cut it without it seeming odd.
I believe he informed other people of the strategy but I don’t know if Martin was one of them.
TIL Kevin Pollack has a reallllly long talk show
"Your special is just how you performed it! SORT OF."
I believe Zach Galifianakis did something similar by removing a article of clothing every so often during his special
That's pretty clever.
But couldn't he just put this into the contract.
"When you air my show then you have to air it as it is.No cutting out."
Actually just met this guy on a flight on Friday. Sat beside him from LAX to BOS. Didn’t talk much until we landed but the guy was really nice and came across as really intelligent. I didn’t know much of his work but now that he’s my biggest celebrity encounter I will have to start watching some of his stuff.
