It's weird how the laugh track and a modern audience both laugh at the "asbestos gloves" line, but for different reasons. For us it's because we know that asbestos is carcinogenic and the idea of wearing clothes made of the material sounds ludicrous. But at the time, the public was widely unaware of the material's toxicity; they're laughing because he was diminishing women for relying on modern conveniences, but then he needs special gloves to operate the barbecue.
Edit: Apparently asbestos-insulated gloves are still used in certain circumstances, because the substance is only dangerous when inhaled.
This genuinely made me laugh, you could re-create this with the cast of Mad Men
Asbestos gloves? I'm picturing puffy oven mitts filled with asbestos fibers. And kids having 'snow ball' fights with their innards when Fido inevitably gets a hold of them.
>A woman's place is in the home so she might as well be in the kitchen
>throw back to caveman days
I think he managed to insult both genders while maintaining the delusion that nothing he said was negative. Almost impressive.
The asbestos gloves really sell it.
It's a shame the stuff kills people, it's a *really* effective insulator.
They're definitely making fun of / satirizing the role of a man here, kind of ahead of its time actually.
why did you spoil the joke
