Funny thing is, the Republic isn't really so Catholic anymore. It's basically a secular democracy which happens to have most of its schools sorta owned by the church for historic reasons but they're pretty much run by regular teachers and function as secular schools.
So in some sense, the Loyalists won in their main demand! Now there's no real argument against a unified Ireland except logistic convenience ones. And people don't usually die for that.
