387 sprngheeljack I have the most profound respect for Steven Hawking and when I was studying physics in college I was commonly immediately lost after reading past the first paragraph of one of his papers. I also have no doubt that human activity is altering the climate. That said, physicists are prone to believing that their capability in one particular area of science lends itself to expertise in others. Steven Hawking is not a climatologist and his opinion on this matter should carry no more weight any any other generally well educated amateur. Professor Hawking knows the process. If he can demonstrate his assertion to be true, he needs to publish. Edit: Holy mother of dog, people. *READ WHAT I WROTE*! I don't deny the existence of anthropogenic climate change, I simply take issue with the Venus claim. I also have degrees in physics and mathematics but know that doesn't make me a climate science expert.
58 Thumper17 As much as this guy makes serious and important points. He's always trotted out as some be all end all answer to everything. When he really isn't. Seeing his name in headlines is almost click bait at this point.
12 ClariNerd617 Environmental Scientist here. This claim is complete and utter bullshit.
41 Richard0Nixon Venus was inhabited a million years ago with semi-educated fossil fuel burning climate change denying fools. Their mantra was the climate is always changing burn on.
35 AkumaBengoshi I think his hyperbole button got stuck again
14 straightsally The density of the atmosphere is the difference. And the distance from the Sun. Mars has an atmosphere that is 95% CO2. It is damn cold. At the height in Venus atmosphere that corresponds to the same atmospheric pressure as on Earth, the temperatures are similar if the decreased distance to the Sun is taken into account. Of course this is simple science and not theoretical mind trips like Hawking usually engages in. This claim of Hawking can be checked by actual measurements of Venus probes. The main issue is of course distance from the Sun which causes the energy absorbed to drop off in a logarithmic fashion. So unless Hawking is able to visualize some method by which Earth changes it's orbit to match that of Venus.... He is blowing smoke up your ass. The atmosphere of Venus contains 200,000 times the CO2 of Earth's atmosphere. This is a massive amount. In fact, if **ALL** the Carbon on Earth were converted to CO2 the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere would only increase 5 times. There would simply not be enough Carbon to go any higher. The dominant greenhouse gas on Earth is water vapor, Not CO2. Unless the distance to the Sun changes this will continue. Every doomsayer that tells you the Earth will end due to CO2 is wrong. Hawking should not let his political desires color his scientific pronouncements.
2 Turntupgreens that’s not the real stephen hawking. he died and was replaced. just go back and look at pictures of him year after year and you’ll see a striking difference in a set of years back to back. it’s not a conspiracy once you see it and notice other little details. that disease kills people wayyyyy long before now. he isn’t a miracle. HE is a fraud.
2 DrungwithaHat Stephen Hawking- the man with a debilitating muscle disease that hasn't affected the bodies largest muscle. He's dead yo
2 DinoHunterX He means that if we don't do something. We will crank up the heat enough to boil everyone and everything. Much LIKE Venus. Which I say we will run out of oxygen before that.
2 tryingmyhardest88 What nonsense, this guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Look at the big freeze in North America, how can you say it'll be as hot as Venus. Not to mention climate change is just a natural phenomena. Duh! ^^/s
5 weneedabetterengine >Venus is by far the hottest planet in the solar system with a searing average surface temperature of 864 degrees Fahrenheit. Although they say it’s a dry heat.
3 WalkerBRiley Well, first we have to convince a certain sect of people that climate change is an actual thing. And that just because it's cold for two weeks in the winter in a very small portion on the Earth doesn't mean that it isn't.
